The AppSense Performance Profiler utility provides visibility and understanding of two of the key features within AppSense Performance Manager; CPU Application Control and Smart Scheduler.

CPU Application Control enables limits to applications and users to be set to ensure that they never consume more than a fixed percentage of the CPU load.

Smart Scheduling distributes CPU processor resource based on a combination of the allocated Share Factor, CPU Soft Limits and CPU Reservation defined in the Performance Manager configuration.

Smart Scheduling includes the following

  • Share Factors - Rules use share factors to specify the relative proportions of the CPU resources available to target applications and users to ensure optimum performance at peak load and the continuous regulation of the fair distribution of available processor resources.
  • Reservations - Rules use reservations to guarantee target applications and users the availability of a specified capacity of CPU resources according to demand. Resources are reallocated by restricting the resources of non-priority applications and users, to free up the required CPU capacity for the applications and users targeted by the rule.
  • Soft Limits - Rules apply specific limits to certain CPU intensive applications, users or combinations of each, during peak load to free up resources to other applications and users when the system is heavily loaded. When the demand on CPU capacity by other applications and user falls and resources are released, the applications and users targeted by the rule can resume more CPU intensive activity beyond the limits of the rule.

AppSense CPU Profiler allows you to vary the CPU load of three simulated applications or workloads which are generated when CPU Profiler starts running.

The CPU load to each of the applications can be varied using the sliders in the application to create the corresponding request for CPU resources. The procedures show how AppSense Performance Manager responds to changes in the CPU resource demands of each application by implementing the configuration rules, specified in the demonstration configuration.

The resources requested by each application is shown in the CPU Profiler graph as a dotted line and represents a percentage of the CPU load for each of the generated workloads. Performance metrics of actual CPU load are plotted against time in their corresponding colors in the application.

Each simulated application from the CPU Profiler generates the total load according to CPU cycles of activity and inactivity. Consequently, the sum of all simulated applications can be less than the total system load. This is due to overlaps in the periods of inactivity by each of the applications and can be more evident at lower requested loads.

The AppSense Management Suite automatically resolves performance and security issues as they occur. The AppSense Management Pack has been designed to integrate the powerful AppSense Auditing component into MOM 2005.

Using simple event processing rules, the AppSense Management Pack can filter all the events generated by the Auditing System and alert the Administrator to performance issues or potential security threats through the State View feature of MOM 2005, providing instant visibility and proactive management capability to the Administrator.

In addition, the AppSense Management Pack includes a comprehensive knowledgebase that provides the Administrator with information and help on how to best configure the AppSense solution for optimal security and performance.

The AppSense Management Pack is available free of charge to all AppSense customers that have a valid software subscription agreement.
